Extra info: Pompeii was a city in southern Italy, near present-day Naples. It was founded at the foot of Mount Vesuvius in the 5th century BC. century by Greeks off the coast of Campania. It later passed into the hands of the Romans, who, due to its location and excellent climate, made it the best resort in ancient Rome. Many wealthy Romans built beautiful country mansions there, adorning them with valuable works of art. In 62 AD. There was a very strong earthquake, which shook this beautiful and rich city. But this earthquake was only a harbinger of its total destruction. Indeed, a few years later, on August 24, 79 AD, a terrible eruption of Vesuvius buried within a few hours under meters of lava, hot mud and ashes this cheerful, wasteful and sinful city forever. More than 2,000 people are estimated to have died from suffocation and were buried under the ashes. Systematic excavations that began in 1860 revealed many details of the daily life of its inhabitants. Survived, protected from the wear and tear of time, all the rich villas, with their numerous murals, the market, the numerous temples, the small and large theater, the arches, the fountains, the shops, the private houses. Details were also saved that show us the sudden death of the city, from the daily life that was abruptly interrupted. People who ate lying on the couches, people who drowned in the fumes trying to escape the horrible death. The value of the ruins of Pompeii is incomparably great, because it gave us an idea of a Roman city as a whole, in the heyday of its prosperity and wealth.
